Here you can get a snapshot of the work we are doing in the Education sector and find out about learning support, scholarships and trades training in our rohe.
Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou’s Matauranga team has a diverse work programme with the key goal being to support Ngati Porou whanau, marae and hapu to participate in opportunities that enable them to make informed choices about their lives.
The Ruatoria-based team co-ordinate and deliver a range of programmes and contracts. Some of the initiatives supported by the Matauranga team include the Ngati Porou Intermarae Festival (Pa Wars), Te Rangitawaea Festival (Nati Awards), E Tipu E Rea educational partnership with the Ministry of Education and PAFT (Parents as First Teachers).
We receive many queries about funding for grants and scholarships. At this stage, the Runanganui does not provide education grants for Iwi members (other than selected grants provided in conjunction with other organisations)
In the meantime, we have put together a comprehensive list of Regional and National Education Grants and Scholarships which can be downloaded here.
Ngati Porou Forests offer the Hansol Scholarship for Forestry and related study for beneficiaries of land blocks involved in the Ngati Porou Hansol Forestry Joint Venture. For more info contact Daniel Willliams, General Manager, Ngati Porou Forests. Email: email@example.com
There is also the Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou and Fulton Hogan Scholarship for tertiary study in engineering. Applications for this scholarship will be posted on this site when it next opens.
Ngati Porou students are encouraged to see if they are eligible for national scholarships such as the Sir Apirana Ngata Memorial Scholarship, administered by Maori Soldiers Trust
You will also find a range of scholarships on the Maori Education Trust website.
The BreakOut database is also worth checking out – it’s New Zealand's primary source of funding information for students, researchers, sports people, artists and those wanting professional development.
Te Toka Trades Training
The Te Toka Trades Training programme represents a new era of trade training in the Gisborne and East Coast region. The initiative is designed to enable Ngati Porou, Maori and Pasifika learners aged 18–34 to get meaningful trades apprenticeships and qualifications that lead to skilled and sustainable work.
Te Toka is led by a consortium of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou, Eastern Institute of Technology and Lincoln University, working alongside private and public stakeholders to support employment opportunities in the local trades industries for Maori and Pasifika communities.
It is also funded and supported by the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment and the Tertiary Education Commission. The Te Toka consortium will work with local businesses and organisations to achieve our common goal of developing the potential of our young people to help transform our local and regional economy
The programme is delivered in the Gisborne/East Coast region and focuses on:
- other regionally significant trades such as horticulture and hospitality.
